Blu-ray discs get their name from the blue laser technology. The shorter wavelength of the laser is the reason why the laser has a blue color. The blue laser has a wavelength of 405 nm compared with the wavelength of 650nm a DVD, the red laser technology. The advantage of a blue laser with a shorter wavelength is that smaller pits can be written and thus the amount of data on the disc is increased.

Blu-ray discs offer three to five times as much space as conventional recordable DVDs, so that high-resolution video (HD) can be recorded, played and overridden.
